چکیده

Introduction: Oral cancer is a major health problem especially in India. In cancer, the equilibrium between proliferation and apoptosis is disturbed. The defect in apoptotic pathway allows cells to proliferate with genetic abnormalities. Thus, the aim of this study is to assess the significance of apoptotic index (AI) as a putative prognostic marker in oral epithelial dysplasia (OED) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Materials and Methods: Study constituted of 60 previously histopathologically confirmed cases, 30 cases of OED and 30 cases of OSCC of different histopathological grades. A uniform section of 3-4 μm thickness was cut from all the blocks and was then stained using hematoxylin and eosin stains. AI was assessed using a binocular research light microscope. The results were sent for statistical analysis using Student’s t-test. Results: The mean AI increased progressively with increasing grades of OED and decreased with increasing grades of OSCC. A maximum mean AI was reported in well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma (WDSCC) 0.7600. The results observed were significant (P < 0.001) on comparing WDSCC with moderately differentiated SCC (MDSCC) and with poorly differentiated SCC (PDSCC) but were insignificant on comparing MDSCC with PDSCC. Conclusion: This suggest tumors that exhibit less apoptosis tend to show aggressive behavior, hence AI can offer an idea about the nature and course of the lesion. Thereby helping in prognosis and predicting its outcome.

Angiogenesis and Tumor-Associated Macrophages in Different Grades of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Verrucous Carcinoma and Epithelial Dysplasia via Immunohistochemical Assessment of Expression of CD34 and CD68 Markers

Background:Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common malignancy of the oral cavity, which is highly invasive. Verrucous carcinoma (VC) is the low-grade form of SCC. Epithelial dysplasia (ED) also has a malignant potential. This immunohistochemical (IHC) study aimed to assess angiogenesis and the presence of tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) in SCC, VC and ED to determi...

Detection of Apoptosis in Leukoplakia and Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma using Methyl Green Pyronin and Hematoxylin and Eosin

Background & Objective: Cell population and turnover are controlled by a balance between cell proliferation and apoptosis. Detection of apoptosis in oral cancer contributes to its better prognosis and improved management. This study aimed to quantify apoptotic cells in leukoplakia and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) using methyl green-pyronin (MGP) and hematoxylin and eosin...

Epithelial Dysplasia in Oral Cavity (Review Article)

Among oral lesions, we encounter a series of malignant epithelial lesions that go through clinical and histopathologic processes in order to be diagnosed. Identifying these processes along with the etiology knowledge of these lesions is very important in prevention and early treatments. Dysplasia is the step preceding the formation of squamous cell carcinoma in lesions which have the potential ...

Correlation of vascularization and inflammation with severity of oral leukoplakia

Background & objective: Changes in submucosal vascularization and inflammation, determined by immunohistochemistry staining, were shown to be correlated with the development of dysplasia and invasiveness of epithelial cells in premalignant and malignant lesions. This study evaluated changes in sections routinely stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E;) in orde...

Unusual presentation of primary mandibular gingival squamous cell ‎carcinoma in young male: A case report

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is usually considered a disease of older people. Recently, there is a change in the occurrence of such lesions in young patients and lacking the established risk factors. CASE REPORT: A 21-year-old male reported with an innocuous gingival growth over lower incisors since a month. Within 15 days he noticed another gingival growth in same region l...
